Q&A Laken Kurtz: Doing Good by Graham
Well, let me assure you, Laken Kurtz is for realz. Partner, athlete, educator, philanthropist. From the Graham Rahal Foundation to living the glamorous life, you'll like getting to know, Laken. Here she is in her own words.

At the events, Graham and I always made eye contact and I was immediately attracted to him, of course, but I had plans of moving out of Indiana to pursue my teaching career. At the end of the month I received a Facebook message from Graham that simply said “It was nice seeing you during the month of May, if you’re ever in Indianapolis again we should get together!” and the rest is history. I later found out that Graham had Googled “Laken 500 Festival Princess” to find me which led him to my Facebook page where he was able to contact me. All I can say is, thank goodness for the Internet!
andhesonit: I have great appreciation for the fact that Graham has established the Graham Rahal Foundation. You're closely involved with the foundation, yes? Can you tell us what it's designed to do and exactly what your role is?
I am closely involved with the foundation and greatly enjoy the work I do. I am considered the “Foundation Director” but obviously work alongside others as well. Through the foundation, I help create events and run them, reach out to sponsors, build our relationship with Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Serious Fun Children’s Network, work with other organizations to grow our foundation, and much more. I wear many hats.
andhesonit: Would you describe it as your "full-time job?"
andhesonit: How many people are employed by the foundation?
andhesonit: I'm curious. Do you have any idea how much money you and Graham have raised as a philanthropic team? I understand if that's proprietary.
andhesonit: Because you're personally involved with Graham and also working with, and I don't know, maybe even technically for, him, do you ever worry about mixing business with pleasure, so to speak?
That next morning the auction idea took off and by the time we made it back to Indianapolis, we had numerous drivers and athletes from different sports onboard. Once we decided to do the auction on Ebay, the donations poured in from all across the world. Graham and I essentially ran the auction from our home in Indiana and Beccy worked from Florida. Items were being delivered every hour to our home and our front hallway and living room were jam packed with boxes. One day, a semi even showed up to the house to deliver signed car parts! Once we received donations, Graham and I would take inventory then drive the items to the Indycar office where they packed items in crates and shipped them out to California for Ebay to put up online. Each night when the auction went live, Beccy and I sat on Twitter sending out tweets describing each item along with a link to the page. This went on for two hours a night, 6 nights a week, for over a month. The auction was very time consuming and tedious but the response was overwhelming and people wanted to do whatever they could to help. The whole experience was moving and just proved how respected and loved Dan was by those all over.
andhesonit: Fastball. Brace yourself. Date night: What's your car of choice to pull out of the Graham Rahal garage?
Since Graham is a professional athlete, he has to be in tiptop shape. We love working out together rather it be running, riding bikes, interval training, or just shooting hoops. It’s great to have a partner who is athletic because we can motivate one another and push each other that extra mile. This isn’t to say that Graham and I don’t enjoy our froyo but we’re a very athletic couple. Since I started dating Graham I’ve become more of a cook. I’m always trying to find healthier versions of our favorite treats and meals that way we aren’t depriving ourselves of the things we love. Living a healthy lifestyle is so important and we try very hard to maintain that.
andhesonit: K. Chance for you to dig deep, here. Right or wrong, I have a tendency to put IndyCar drivers on a pedestal, and without getting into all the nauseating details, Graham's right up there at the sharp end. That being said, we all know no single person is perfect, so what is Graham's most annoying habit? Something he does that you really wish he didn't?
LK: The best way readers can learn about the foundation and give back is by visiting our website, www.grahamrahalfoundation.org. There, readers can find information on events, the organizations we support, and a place to make a donation. We also use social media such as Twitter and Facebook to provide additional information. Readers can follow us online at @GR_Foundation or “Like” our Facebook page. Graham and I are also constantly talking about the foundation on our own personal Twitter pages (Graham — Laken). If readers have any additional questions they can reach me directly at Laken@GrahamRahalFoundation.org
andhesonit: Thanks for playing along, Laken—and personal thanks for the good work you're doing with Graham and the Graham Rahal Foundation.

Just thanks...

Feliz Navidad from AHOI and special guest photographer, Graham Rahal |
The one-year anniversary of ...and he’s on it passed a few weeks ago without fanfare. Oh, I think I might have sent a tweet or two out about it, but it really deserves more than that.
On the eve of one of my favorite days on the calendar, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate time to extend a formal “thank you” to all of you for your support of this little endeavor of mine.
I like to say I dove into Twitter and started the blog with “eyes wide shut”—and thankfully so. Had I actually looked before I leapt and seen the über-smart and talented peeps that make up the virtual IndyCar world, I certainly would have talked myself out of the whole thing.
Because of the killer content that rolls off the keyboards of the IndyCar bloggers on a daily basis, that makes the “success”—if you can call it that—of ...and he’s on it that much more rewarding.
And the fact is AHOI would be NOTHING without its readers, so the credit goes to you, and deservedly so.
I could blather on about it, but let’s just say the blog and Twitter thing have become important to me. So thanks for helping to enrich my life and, in turn, I hope I’ve added a little something to yours by giving you a place to go and chat it up about what I consider to be the greatest sport in the world.
I raise a virtual toast to you and wish you and those you hold dear a very Merry Christmas and totally rad New Year—cheers!
Card back, please...

Rahal Speaks with Andhesonit
Unfortunately, nothing like one of Jack Arute’s one-on-one gems that aired this past season on Versus, but in an extremely rare instance of acknowledgement by the outside world, Andhesonit did have a brief, but satisfying, Twitter exchange with The Graham Rahal—and, remarkably, we learned something.
Through Tweets posted by Rahal that indicated he was recently in the company of Chip Ganassi’s partner, Felix Sabates, et al, and on his way yesterday to Minneapolis (home base of Target), I wildly assumed Graham was a lock to partner Franchitti and Dixon at Ganassi’s IZOD IndyCar team... uh, no. Here’s the Twitter trail:
Andhesonit:
Am I the only 1 watching @grahamrahal? First seen with Sabates, now targeting a trip to Minneapolis. Hello @pressdog & @curtcavin?!
GR:
@andhesonit i can assure you Minneapolis isnt for Target. promise you that!
So there it is. Humbling proof I shouldn’t even be allowed to walk past an actual pressroom, but who cares? So I suffered a little Howdy Holmes brain fade and looked foolish in front of the masters, Curt Cavin and Pressdog, and all 12 of my Twitter followers. At least we know—for now—a Ganassi/Target deal is not imminent for Graham.
Stayed tuned to Andhesonit for more random acts of journalism.

On a Homeless Rahal
It came to light this week that, with roughly 60 days till the green flag drops in Sao Paulo, the Series’ hottest rising star “still doesn’t have a contract for 2010.” (Read Curt Cavin’s article here: http://bit.ly/5kZ5Be.)
So CC’s just winding us up, right? No, any self-respecting devotee of the IZOD IndyCar Series’ foremost authority on substantiated scuttlebutt knows full well Curt DOES NOT kid.
So, it’s true... How in the name of all things Al Unser could such a thing happen? Say it ain’t so. IndyCar finally gets a legit series sponsor, is building momentum for 2010, and one of the Series’ most valuable properties is relegated to bench racing with Servia and the ex-Indy Lights champions’ club?
Now, don’t go getting your signed Milka Duno boxers in a bunch. GR is smart—wickedly smart, from what I can see—and therefore, one can only assume he’s very assiduously weighing his options. And if his talent has anything to do with it (and there’s truth in a couple of other nuggets dropped by CC in his article), they’re formidable options at that.
Let’s take a closer look. Unlike yours truly, Rahal’s smart enough not to make a lateral move, unless his back’s against the wall. So assuming GR hasn’t told Carl Haas, flat-out, he doesn’t want to be at NHL next year, I just don’t see how he’s not welcomed back with open arms (and all the Cohibas he can chew on).
If he’s going to take a substantial step up, that leaves for a narrow playing field.
First, let’s take the two options Curt mentioned:
• De Ferran—Gil’s apparently proclaimed Rahal as his man, if adequate sponsorship can be found, and De Ferran will likely run a first-class operation, but I’m sure the former employees of Gil’s defunct sports car team are scattering further to the wind with every passing day.
• Ganassi—team officials have gone on record that they’d like Graham, but again... money.
Other possibilities:
• Andretti—Though Tom Anderson mentioned publicly that talk of a fifth car had been bantered about at his shop, that’s stretching things pretty thin, don’t you think? Besides, I would think Graham would want more personal attention than that.
• Penske—Nah, brimming with hot shoes already.
• Last but not least, you knew it was coming... wait for it... get ready... USF1? Okay, okay. I know, the debate over who’s going to drive for USF1 has become about as interesting as knowing which posh European locale Robert Doornbos is currently “training” at. But considering Rahal’s stated interest in F1, you gotta throw it out there. That, despite the fact the IICS seems to be where his heart is.
So there you have it, just a paragraph in Pit Pass, but worthy of further discussion, in my book. I think the notion of Rahal being a free agent is fascinating—savory grist for the silly season rumor mill.
So where does Graham ultimately get down to business? Who knows, but it will most certainly be in IndyCar, and it’s going to be very interesting until we know for sure.
